As the official birthstone of June, pearls are having a moment once again.

No longer limited to classic necklaces and traditional studs. Today's pearl designs are fresh, contemporary and full of personality. It's no wonder they've become a staple for jewellery lovers everywhere!

With sunshine on our skin and holiday season on the horizon, we're celebrating the aptly named jewel of the sea with our ocean inspired collection.

Think Starfish Charm Earrings and Scallop Hoops. Our pieces combine the organic beauty of the freshwater pearl with playful shell and marine life designs.

How is a pearl made?

Pearls are one of the most unique gems. Unlike gemstones that are mined from the earth, pearls are grown entirely within a living organism.

Found inside Oysters and Mussels, pearls begin their journey when a tiny irritant (like a grain of sand) enters the mollusc. To protect their soft tissue, the mollusc slowly coats the irritant with layers of lustrous nacre (also known as Mother of Pearl). Over time, layer upon layer of nacre builds up, creating the beautiful pearl we know and love!

This process can take anywhere from six months to four years, hence why some pearls are highly valued.

What is a freshwater pearl?

There are two types of natural pearl, saltwater and freshwater. Our chosen pearl is the Freshwater Pearl.

Produced by mussels, these pearls are found in rivers and lakes rather than the ocean. Unlike the oyster, the mussel can produce many different pearls at once while maintaining the same lustre and durability as marine pearls.

Freshwater pearls are real, genuine pearls! Loved by many, they offer a beautiful and affordable alternative to traditional saltwater pearls.

One of the things we adore most about freshwater pearls is their individuality. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colours.

How should I care for my pearls?

Pearls require gentle care to protect their natural shine. Always put your pearl jewellery on after applying makeup, perfumes, and hairspray. Never submerge them in harsh chemicals and safely clean them using a soft, damp cloth.
